Stephenie Meyer - Eclipse

Hardcover: 640 pages
Publisher: Little, Brown Young Readers; 1 edition (August 7, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0316160202

First sentence:
There's a note, but I am skipping that.
I ran my fingers across the page, feeling the dents where he had pressed the pen to the paper so hard that it has nearly broken through.

My rating: 4 ♥

I read this book because I have read Twilight and New Moon which are the first two books of this series. I thoroughly enjoyed those. I like this book also. Ms. Meyer is a gifted writer, however, I am not much for rationalizing cheating or anything similar, so I couldn't quit enjoy the book as I wanted to. This is a young adult book, and maybe that's how young adult love is supposed to be...I just don't like it.

Book Description
Readers captivated by Twilight and New Moon will eagerly devour Eclipse, the much anticipated third book in Stephenie Meyer's riveting vampire love saga. As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. Cecelia Ahern - PS, I Love You

Hardcover: 384 pages
Publisher: Hyperion; 1 edition (February 4, 2004)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1401300901

My rating: 4 ♥

First Sentence:
HOLLY HELD THE BLUE COTTON sweater to her face and the familiar smell immediately struck her, an overwhelming grief knotting her stomach and pulling at her heart.

I found this book at a library sale. It's for a dollar. I have it on my TBR pile for a few months when I heard it's going to be a movie. I read it and have so much fun with it, even though it's kind of sad. There are funny moments too.

I have read this author's other book Love, Rosie, which was a delightful book to read. I am looking forward to the movie for this book, PS, I Love You because it has Gerard Butler in it.

From Publishers Weekly
Ahern, the mediagenic 22-year-old daughter of Ireland's prime minister, debuts with a sweet, sentimental tale of a young widow's trials and triumphs in the year after her husband's death. Soul mates Holly and Gerry married in their early 20s; when Gerry dies of brain cancer at 30, Holly is utterly bereft. But Gerry has a final gift: a series of letters, which Holly is to open on the first of each month from March to New Year's, and which will guide her on her journey from grief. Gerry correctly predicts that Holly will not have gone through his belongings by June, found a new job by September or considered falling in love again by December, but with his posthumous epistolary encouragement she does all those things. She also enters a karaoke contest, takes a beach vacation and dances at a holiday ball she'd always attended with Gerry. The months pass as close friends help prop Holly up; around her, a marriage falls apart, a couple gets engaged and a friend announces her pregnancy. Within her tight-knit family, Holly's youngest brother makes a revealing film of her birthday party, her elder brothers change places in her allegiance and her parents take in one stray grown child after another for stays short and long. Ahern's speed (she wrote the book in three months) and her youth do show-the wisdom in evidence owes much to Nicholas Sparks and Sophie Kinsella-and her prose is pedestrian. She boasts a natural storytelling talent, however, resulting in a compelling tale sparked by an unusual premise.

Why I listened to this? My husband found this CD at the library, and really enjoyed it. I listened and was hooked on it too. I'm off to find other Michael Connelly's books.

First Sentence:
The morning air off the Mojave in late winter is as clean and crisp as you'll ever breathe in Los Angeles County.

My favorite moment: When Mick, the lawyer, was at the courtroom and used the mine analogy. How the prosecutor had stepped on a mine pin and is afraid to move his feet knowing that some thing's going to detonate.

Book blurb:
A tale about a cynical defense attorney whose one remaining spark of integrity may cost him his life.

Sherrilyn Kenyon - The Dream-Hunter (A Dream-Hunter Novel, Book 1)

First sentence:
Completely motionless, Megeara Saatsakis stood on the edge of a cliff looking out on waters so perfectly blue they were almost painful to behold.

Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages

I bought this book from Romance Writer of America signing. I waited in line for half and hour and bought this book and the author signed it. I also bought some books for my friend in the Philippines, but I don't think she got it yet. I mailed it in July and she still haven't gotten it. I guess it's really lost now.

Anyways, I am confused about timelines in this book. You see, in the Dark Hunter series, Nick was already dead, and here at the end of the book, he's an 18 year old again, and none of the Dark Hunters were married yet.

This is where you can find the correct reading order of this series.

Book Blurb:
In the ethereal world of dreams, there are champions who fight to protect the dreamer and there are demons who prey on them...

Arik is such a predator. Condemned by the gods to live eternity without emotions, Arik can only feel when he’s in the dreams of others. For thousands of years, he’s drifted through the human unconscious, searching for sensation. Now he’s finally found a dreamer whose vivid mind can fill his emptiness.

Dr. Megeara Kafieri watched her father ruin himself and his reputation as he searched to prove Atlantis was real. Her deathbed promise to him to salvage his reputation has now brought her to Greece where she intends to prove once and for all that the fabled island is right where her father said it was. But frustration and bad luck dog her every step. Especially the day they find a stranger floating in the sea. His is a face she’s seen many times.... in her dreams.

What she doesn’t know is that Arik holds more than the ancient secrets that can help her find the mythical isle of Atlantis. He has made a pact with the god Hades: In exchange for two weeks as a mortal man, he must return to Olympus with a human soul. Megeara’s soul.

With a secret society out to ruin her expedition, and mysterious accidents that keep threatening her life, Megeara refuses to quit. She knows she’s getting closer to Atlantis and as she does, she stumbles onto the truth of what Arik really is.

For Arik his quest is no longer simple. No human can know of a Dream-Hunter’s existence. His dream of being mortal has quickly turned into his own nightmare and the only way to save himself will be to sacrifice the very thing he wanted to be human for. The only question is, will he?

Alexander Mccall Smith - Tears of the Giraffe

Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: Anchor (September 3, 2002)
My rating: 4

First sentence:
Mr J.L.B. Matekoni, proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, found it difficult to believe that Mma Ramotswe, the accomplished founder of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, had agreed to marry him.

I read this book because I like the first one in the series. This author is great at making you like his characters. Mma. Ramotse is now engaged and solving mystery as ever.

I like the picture of Botswana it shows.

My favorite moments? It's probably the discussion of Freud and how he was worried that boys love their mothers.

Book Blurb:
Alexander McCall Smith (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) offers the second and third installments of his dignified, humorous Botswanan series. In Tears of the Giraffe, PI Precious Ramotswe tracks a missing American man whose widowed mother appeals to Ramotswe; meanwhile, the imperturbable detective is endangered at home by her fiance's resentful maid.

Carson McCullers - The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (audio)

I found this unabridged audio book at a library and decided to listen to it.

First Sentence:IN THE town there were two mutes, and they were always together.

My rating: 3 ♥

I like the story overall. I like the parts with Mr. Singer in it. The central character of the story. All the characters in this book are well-developed. So well-developed that you can see their point of view. I just wish there was more plot to the story.

I was once asked to choose between character and plot, and I thought I would like character. But after hearing this book, I decided I want plot. Well-develop character can only be taken so far, but for a more entertaining read, I definitely need plot.

Favorite parts: When Mick thinks she's in love with Mr. Singer and followed him around everywhere.

Beware a Scot's Revenge (School for Heiresses, Book 3) by Sabrina Jeffries

Mass Market Paperback: 384 pages
Publisher: Pocket; Pocket Books Pbk. Ed edition (May 22, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1416516107
My rating: 3 ♥

A feisty heroine, I like that in a book. A verile Scott who's got the hots for the girl, even better. Then they start to simmer, and sizzle, and I can't put the book down. There's something about the Highlands, and Scots, and historical fiction which makes me want to devour a book like candy.

Book blurb:
Lady Venetia Campbell's visit to her childhood home in Scotland takes a dramatic turn when she's kidnapped at pistol point by her father's sworn enemy. Sir Lachlan Ross is widely feared in his guise as The Scottish Scourge, but Venetia remembers her former neighbor as a handsome youth whose attentions she craved. Now a wickedly sexy man, Lachlan's appeal is even more intoxicating...and much more dangerous. Though Lachlan tries to treat her as his foe, his scorching kisses tell another story. And despite his plan to use her as a weapon against her father, Venetia is determined that Lachlan's lust for revenge will be trumped by an even more powerful desire....

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult (audio)

My Take: 5 ♥
Picoult is an engaging story-teller. I don't think that because you've been bullied you should go kill those people who bullied you. There are a lot of people like that in the world. I would like to hold the parents partly responsible though. Why didn't they as if he's being bullied, why didn't they move him to a different school? Home school him? Do something. I am sympathetic with the parents of the shooter, but I find the shooter guilty and he should hanged. Ms. Picoult has a talent with writing about moral dilemma and as a reader, be able to see clearly each side of the story. It's a pleasure to read this book even if it's dealing with an unpleasant topic of school shooting.

Book Blurb:
Sterling, NH is a small, ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens until a student enters the local high school with an arsenal of guns and starts shooting, changing the lives of everyone inside and out. The daughter of the judge sitting on the case is the states best witness but she cant remember what happened in front of her own eyes. Or can she? Featuring the return of some familiar characters (Jordan McAfee from The Pact and Salem Falls; Patrick DuCharme from Perfect Match), Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether a person is ever whom they seem to be.

Texas Splendor by Lorraine Heath

My Take: 5 ♥
This is the third of Leigh Brothers trilogy by an author I enjoy reading. She's imaginative, believable and fun. I have not read the second book of the series. I just overlooked it. I usually read the books in order. I like Austin from the first book. This is one of those times when reading a lot of book simultaneously kind of ruin a good story. Still, a very good book. A keeper for sure!

Book Blurb:
Five years in prison for a crime he didn't commit...

That's how long Austin Leigh has waited to clear his name, and to be reunited with his beloved Becky. But when he is finally released, Becky is married to another. Now, Austin is determined to find the killer who destroyed his life and ruined his one chance for love. He is searching for justice--and for revenge. But what he discovers along the way is something quite different.

Her name is Loree Grant, and she's survived tragedy of her own. She is the kind of friend that Austin has never had, a true companion on the long road to forgiveness and redemption. And as Austin slowly bares his soul to this strong and beautiful woman, he begins to open his heart . . . to love.
